Goals for 2010: Learn Watercolor Painting

January 8, 2010 in Productivity

In early December I sat down to do my Annual Review and plot out some goals and strategies for 2010. One of the ideas that I decided was worthwhile is to learn how to paint with watercolors as part of my overall strategy of Doing Something Creative Every Day.

The Lovely Bride and I enjoyed a rare day off together so as part of our shopping we stopped in an art-supply store and picked up a few basics: brushes, paints, a palette, and books on technique.

The book, “Watercolors in a Weekend” particularly inspires me, as it includes a set of exercises for skill practice then a sample painting that incorporates those exercises. Baby steps, Stephen, baby steps. Unlike this project that I started a year ago and promptly abandoned, the watercolor project contains a series of discrete actions that have an explicit conclusion.

“Bonsai in Colored Pencil”, on the other hand, was so unfocused as to be impossible for an ADD-enhanced individual like myself to be able to accomplish. I am looking forward to sharing this project with you, and if anyone else wants to join in we can start a flickr group for it. What do you think?
