Getting People to Hate You

I saw link to this cartoon by Hugh McLeod of Gaping Void, and I thought I’d share it with you, as it mirrors some of my own thoughts lately:

As an entrepreneur myself, it is a little bit strange to talk to people about what I do and see that they have a negative reaction, as though not having a “job” is crazy or dishonest.
“How can you even think about starting your own business in this economy?” is probably the number one question that I get.

Create your own stimulus

While there is a legitimate debate as to whether or not this current economic downturn is going to become a full-blown depression there is no debate about how to improve one’s own, personal situation.

Work harder at making something for yourself.

If you work harder at your 9-to-5  job, but still only get paid for 8 hours a day, you are not making anything for yourself – you are making more money for your boss. If you can’t just walk away from your job, then get a second job – a job working for yourself.

What do you care about?

What makes you happy or excited to give your attention to?

Is there a way to make money doing it? If there is (and the chances are good that there is), get started right now.

You can do it. (and if you think you can’t, or don’t know how to start, ask me for help!) Grab a pen and a blank piece of paper and write down every single thing that you like to do that you could possibly make money doing, something that could replace your job if that job went away tomorrow. Now think for a minute. What is stopping you from creating your own personal stimulus? Don’t wait for the government to help you (think about the DMV for a minute!), you will have to make this happen for you and yours.
